Despite the wonderful design, the biggest impression I was left with is that this is not a park. For a long time, I feel that the idea of “park” and “landscaping” has been placed under the “pastoral shadow” of Mr. Olmsted and his amazing work in parks across New York City and America at large.
I’m no Gary England, but this is crazy. Back in the old days, it was cold when it was supposed to be cold, and warm when it was supposed to be warm, and men were men, etcetera etcetera.
This weekend was “Manhattanhenge,” a term popularized by Neil deGrasse Tyson, the director of the Hayden Planetarium, to describe the solar event where the sunset is lined up with the east-west streets on Manhattan’s grid. Mr. Tyson argues that this is perhaps a unique urban phenomenon in the world, if not the universe.
In my mind, the big question in play is if Times Square can become a 21st century equivalent of the urban room and gathering space that Union Square traditionally has represented.
