In the past, his department awarded funding on the basis of targets such as audience size and take-up among such “priority groups” as ethnic minorities, but he and McMaster want to emphasise more subjective criteria. “Instead of just focusing on things you can measure,” Purnell said, “people have got to have the space and the courage to say, ‘Actually, this is better than that, and we’re going to fund the stuff which is going to be world-class.’ “

I have to say that I fully agree with this statement. As a society, we receive what we deserve…but we also receive what we ask for. If we demand better from our arts and our architecture, shouldn’t that suggest that we might indeed receive it?
